Do read these extensive supporting notes. There is a story that circulates about the Jesuit priests that were only eight blocks from the epicenter of the Hiroshima bomb, who all survived the blast. A number of accounts differ on the details; distance from the blast, harm done to the priests. However, parts of Father Siemes' account concur with the miraculous story. "Father Cieslik and Father Kleinsorge have minor injuries but are completely exhausted." "Fukai, the secretary of the Mission, is completely unhurt". And concerning the building, "Everything was thrown about in the rooms themselves, but the wooden framework of the house remained intact. The solidity of the structure which was the work of Brother Gropper again shone forth." See this rare interview of F...

  • How to Make a Chair | Episode 10: FRAME

**New Videos Every Sunday** I designed and fabricated the original Bow Spring Chair as part of a furniture making workshop at Harvard and MIT in 2014. I was interested in how the arms and legs of the chair could work in unison as a type of double bow spring structure – becoming extremely strong under direct loading, yet flexible and responsive to the shifting load of the user. The legs/arms of the chair are made from steam bent, glue laminated strips of ash, and the seat is made from glue laminated birch plywood. Throughout the semester I employed many different techniques of fabrication from hand files to CNC lathes. This series of videos will look at how I develop the design further and attempt to get the chair to market. Music by: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF34N4gJAKE Blog po...

I'm "home" back in England for 3 weeks visiting family so I'll be thinking making/designing rather than making dust and videos till I get back , so here's the last video for a month . I had some left over pieces of oak, maple and mahogany and used them for this project. I plan on making a matching folding table soon. I had seen pictures of chairs that fold like this and took that concept and figured out this design myself. you could make it out of a single peice of 3/4 plywood but I'm not sure of how strong that would be. I used 7/8 thick stock and tried to keep enough wood to where it would retain some strength but also not be too bulky . the only change I'm going to do is to run the seat part across the dado and add a spline for strength along the end grain ,while I'm sure the glue joint is ok I feel any added strength and stability can't hurt. I made 4 chairs and wanted to make the chairs as compact as I could i really only need them for holidays and wanted them to fold away and not take up too much room when not in use. they are actually pretty comfortable although I really only made them for "kids table" chairs. as with most things I make I have a general idea then figure it out as I go ,I wasn't planning on using the bolt latches but then figured as these chairs are mostly for kids it would be better and safer to have it all lock together . had I made them wider they would be sufficiant for most adults too ,they held my weight but I apparently have more junk in my trunk ....who knew ! please like and subscribe if you like what you see ,please check out my other videos ,and any comments or questions are welcomed thank you for watching

The Eames Lounge Chair Wood (LCW) (also known as Low Chair Wood or Eames Plywood Lounge Chair) was designed by iconic husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames in 1946. The Eames' molded-plywood chair was their first attempt to create a single shell that would be comfortable without padding and could be quickly mass-produced. Throughout the early 1940s, the Eames' and their colleagues experimented with this concept. Discovering that plywood did not withstand the stresses produced at the intersection of the chair's seat and back, they abandoned the single-shell idea in favor of a two-piece chair with separate molded-plywood panels for the back and seat. The chairs -- plus molded-plywood tables and wall screens -- were unveiled to the public in 1946. Variations of these designs are still in production. GENESIS OF THE LCW During WWII Charles and Ray Eames are commissioned by the U.S. Government to design a lightweight, inexpensive leg splint to transport wounded soldiers off the field. Access to military technology and manufacturing facilities allowed the Eameses to perfect their technique for molding plywood in 1943 - 5,000 were ordered by the navy. Splints were modeled after Eames’ own leg and allowed him to hone the technique of molding the plywood into complex curves – the splint became the precursor to the early plywood furniture. Who were Charles and Ray Eames: Charles Eames (1907-78) and Ray Eames (1912-88) gave shape to America's twentieth century. Their lives and work represented the nation's defining movements: the West Coast's coming-of-age, the economy's shift from making goods to producing information, and the global expansion of American culture. The Eameses embraced the era's visionary concept of modern design as an agent of social change, elevating it to a national agenda. Their evolution from furniture designers to cultural ambassadors demonstrated their boundless talents and the overlap of their interests with those of their country. In a rare era of shared objectives, the Eames' partnered with the federal government and the country's top businesses to lead the charge to modernize postwar America.. ---------------------------------------------------------------- If you see this, type "ONLY THE BEST BRANDS!" in the comments - and please LIKE/FAV! ---------------------------------------------------------------- BrandmadeTV - How the Eames LCW Chair is made © BrandmadeTV 2015 This format and title of this program is protected under Copyright and Trademark Law and may not be emulated or re-created in any way without express consent in any territory worldwide.

The solidity of the structure which was the work of Brother Gropper again shone forth." See this rare interview of Father Siemes, who was outside Hiroshima when the blast occurred, and refer back to the associated written accounts, which I have quoted here, and included links for. ...... Source of US military film: http://www.cddc.vt.edu/host/atomic/hiroshim/intervu1.html Father Siemes interview is found at: http://www.cddc.vt.edu/host/atomic/hiroshim/siemes.html One story of the Hiroshima miracle found at: http://holysouls.com/sar/rosarymiracle.htm .... Do note that there were two buildings. A Parish House, in the city of Hiroshima, containing at least: Father Schiffer, Father Superior LaSalle, Father Kleinsorge, Father Cieslik, and Fukai, the secretary of the Mission. "A theology student and two kindergarten children" The Novitiate, another building was outside Hiroshima, in Nagatsuke. Containing at least: Father Siemes, Father Rektor, Father Stolte and Father Erlinghagen. Also Father Kopp, who on day of the atomic blast, went to hold mass at "a home for children at the edge of the city". There is also Father Luhmer and Father Laures, who seem to be associated with the Novitiate, outside the city . ... Soon comes news that the entire city has been destroyed by the explosion and that it is on fire. What became of Father Superior and the three other Fathers who were at the center of the city at the Central Mission and Parish House? We had up to this time not given them a thought because we did not believe that the effects of the bomb encompassed the entire city ... At about four o'clock in the afternoon, a theology student and two kindergarten children, who lived at the Parish House and adjoining buildings which had burned down, came in and said that Father Superior LaSalle and Father Schiffer had been seriously injured and that they had taken refuge in Asano Park on the river bank. It is obvious that we must bring them in since they are too weak to come here on foot. ... Finally we reach the entrance of the park. ... At the far corner of the park, on the river bank itself, we at last come upon our colleagues. Father Schiffer is on the ground pale as a ghost. He has a deep incised wound behind the ear and has lost so much blood that we are concerned about his chances for survival. The Father Superior has suffered a deep wound of the lower leg. Father Cieslik and Father Kleinsorge have minor injuries but are completely exhausted. While they are eating the food that we have brought along, they tell us of their experiences. They were in their rooms at the Parish House--it was a quarter after eight, exactly the time when we had heard the explosion in Nagatsuke--when came the intense light and immediately thereafter the sound of breaking windows, walls and furniture. They were showered with glass splinters and fragments of wreckage. Father Schiffer was buried beneath a portion of a wall and suffered a severe head injury. The Father Superior received most of the splinters in his back and lower extremity from which he bled copiously. Everything was thrown about in the rooms themselves, but the wooden framework of the house remained intact. The solidity of the structure which was the work of Brother Gropper again shone forth. They had the same impression that we had in Nagatsuke: that the bomb had burst in their immediate vicinity. The Church, school, and all buildings in the immediate vicinity collapsed at once. Beneath the ruins of the school, the children cried for help. They were freed with great effort. Several others were also rescued from the ruins of nearby dwellings. Even the Father Superior and Father Schiffer despite their wounds, rendered aid to others and lost a great deal of blood in the process. ... Fukai, the secretary of the Mission, is completely out of his mind. He does not want to leave the house and explains that he does not want to survive the destruction of his fatherland. He is completely uninjured. Father Kleinsorge drags him out of the house on his back and he is forcefully carried away. ... (A good question is, since the priests inside Hiroshima actually survived the blast, why didn't the US military interview them?)

Turning old logs into office chairs. I needed new office chairs so I started looking around for some wood to use. I found a guy who had some old cherry logs so I took them and turned them into chairs. The design is by Pierre Jeanneret. When I saw his chair I knew that's what I wanted to build. I had to build a prototype first to make sure I got all the angles correct. This was a fun project and my first "fine furniture" build. It has lower thermal conductivity than the other materials. The cases are all oil finished so that they can keep the warm texture. it protects the wooden material from inside, not like chemical coating on the surface, you can feel the original warm wooden feature and also it makes the case more full and rich as time goes by. on the other hand, solid timber can be affected by the climate, and warped or changed the shape. it, however, proves that the wood is natural and still breathing. we believe that can make our goods more special. from the thinnest part in the middle, it makes slight curve to the both thick ends. the curve makes it possible to fit the iphone case comfortably in your hand, and also you can feel the wood texture more. The curve helps you hold the case and the thickness in the both ends protect the fragile corners. once you pick it up, you may see the perfect shape is not only functional but also beautiful:) 【LOVEBNTってこんなお店】 ■デニムの産地備後にある1974年創業の国産子供服ブランド『BNT』だけを扱うオンラインストアです。 LOVEBNT http://lovebnt.com/
